Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of Ava DuVernay took place on the 24th day of August, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of art by her aunt Denise as a young child. The aunt was on the night shift as a nurse, so she could follow her passion for theater and art throughout the day. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was educated by her mother about how the art form could be utilized to engage people. Similarly DuVernay's mother was socially conscious and taught that she could express her thoughts through art. While DuVernay grew up living in Compton with her family, she was a summer resident in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family grew up for generations. DuVernay's Dad recalled seeing the civil rights march of the past across the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by her time in Selma and decided to make a documentary about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. After graduation she was enrolled at her first year at the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with certificates in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay started producing for the broadcast industry while she was in her the college. Her career began working as an assistant at CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being asked to examine the garbage at the home of one of the jury. As a result of her duties she was dissatisfied with journalism and moved into the public relations industry. DuVernay was hired straight after graduating from college as a junior publicist at an unassuming studio. The company she founded for her own PR, The DuVernay Agency was founded in 1999. Apart from PR, the agency also created a variety of marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as The Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
